The Problem:  The Tennessee Department of Corrections (TDOC) reported that on June 30, 2014, a combined total of 21,246 adults and 6 juveniles were incarcerated throughout its 14 statewide prisons. For the fiscal year 2012-13, the average daily cost to house each TDOC offender was $67.21; for those housed on death row the cost was $103.74. That equates to more than $1.4 million per day or $511 million per year. Approximately 9,000 are released annually to our communities; but, without a changed heart and a solid support system, approximately 67.5% or 6075 individuals will go back to prison within 3 years.

FOCUS Group Ministries is a Christian, non-denominational, 501(C)(3) IRS recognized non-profit organization with a history dating back to 1992. FOCUS (Following Our Choices Unto Success) works in the Knox County Detention Facility, Morgan County Correctional Complex (MCCX), Bledsoe County Correctional Complex (BCCX), and Northeast Regional Correctional Complex (NECX).

The FOCUS work "Behind the Walls" includes unique evan-gelistic events, weekly support group meetings, discipleship classes, life-skills classes, one-on-one work in various maximum security units, a fatherhood initiative, a motherhood initiative, a seminary extension program, and faith-based transition counseling. Work is done at all three East Tennessee prisons and Knox County Detention Center.

In 2014, several hundred FOCUS volunteers provided 9099 hours of service both behind and beyond the walls of Knox County Detention Facility and the three prisons in East Tennessee. In appreciation of their volunteer spirit, the FOCUS Group Ministries team of staff and volunteers has been named TDOC's top nonprofit organization for East Tennessee twice.

Mission Statement
: help inmates and their families to know Jesus as their Savior, to mature in their faith, and to transition back into society as good citizens … Changing FOCUS, Changing Lives!

Vision Statement: Transformation, not Rehabilitation by FOCUSing on Jesus Christ = True Freedom

FOCUS Family Support Team provides ministry to the children and spouses of the incarcerated by providing transportation for family members to the East TN prisons on special occasions (e.g., Mothers Day) and coordinating Prison Fellowship's Angel Tree Christmas Program for local children of incarcerated parents.

Teen FOCUS Lock-Down Teen FOCUS Lock-Down

The Lock-Down Outside Program provides weekend events and monthly mentoring to children of incarcerated parents and other at-risk kids in our community.

FOCUS Christian AcademyFOCUS Christian Academy provides a safe atmosphere for ex-offenders seeking a meaningful place in society after incarceration. We use a three-phase approach: Spirit, Mind & Body, through life skills classes, spiritual development, counseling, accountability and workforce development with our "Back-to-Work" program. This structured reentry program is organized and designed to address specific issues which impede an ex-offender's success. These individuals can then make a lasting difference in their families, their churches, and their community.
