The Problem:  The Tennessee Department of Corrections (TDOC) reported that on June 30, 2014, a combined total of 21,246 adults and 6 juveniles were incarcerated throughout its 14 statewide prisons. For the fiscal year 2012-13, the average daily cost to house each TDOC offender was $67.21; for those housed on death row the cost was $103.74. That equates to more than $1.4 million per day or $511 million per year. Approximately 9,000 are released annually to our communities; but, without a changed heart and a solid support system, approximately 67.5% or 6075 individuals will go back to prison within 3 years.

FOCUS Group Ministries is a Christian, non-denominational, 501(C)(3) IRS recognized non-profit organization with a history dating back to 1992. FOCUS (Following Our Choices Unto Success) serves in all three of the East Tennessee prisons: Morgan County Correctional Complex (MCCX), Bledsoe County Correctional Complex (BCCX), and Northeast Regional Correctional Complex (NECX). God is expanding the ministry’s territory in area jails as well, currently serving in: Knox County Detention Facility, Roane County Detention Facility and Anderson County Detention Facility. Several other surrounding counties have expressed an interest in partnering with FOCUS to bring educational and faith-based programs to their facilities. Please pray and respond if God may be calling you to step into a new ministry by serving alongside of us in His Kingdom work.

The FOCUS work "Behind the Walls" includes unique evangelistic events, weekly support group meetings, discipleship classes, life-skills classes, one-on-one work in various maximum security units, a fatherhood initiative, a motherhood initiative, a seminary extension program, and faith-based transition counseling. Work is done at all three East Tennessee prisons and Knox County Detention Facility.

Beyond the Walls FOCUS provides transition services to ex-offenders recently released to the Job TrainingKnoxville community. Services include weekly support group meetings, Safe Housing options, mentoring, workforce development, a "Back-to-Work" program through the CEOs (Christian Ex-Offenders Services) Program, and continuing educational training through the FOCUS Christian Academy

In 2014, several hundred FOCUS volunteers provided 9099 hours of service both behind and beyond the walls of Knox County Detention Facility and the three prisons in East Tennessee. In appreciation of their volunteer spirit, the FOCUS Group Ministries team of staff and volunteers has been named TDOC's top nonprofit organization for East Tennessee twice.

Families Belong Together

FOCUS Family Support Team provides ministry to the children and spouses of the incarcerated by providing transportation for family members to the East TN prisons on special occasions (e.g., Mothers Day) and coordinating Prison Fellowship's Angel Tree Christmas Program for local children of incarcerated parents.

2014 Volunteer of the Year

Theresa Fletcher has been named Volunteer of the Year for 2014. God called her to prison ministry last year and she has been faithful in serving the women of Bledsoe County Correctional Complex. Her obedience has helped pave the way for FOCUS Group Ministries to develop a Motherhood Initiative Program for the women behind bars. Rain or sunshine, Theresa drives to Bledsoe every Tuesday to minister to 85 plus women. Lives are being transformed by the Power of the Holy Spirit as she shares the message of Hope in Jesus. What a blessing Theresa is to God, the FOCUS Team and these precious ladies that yearn for hope.

Mission Statement: help inmates and their families to know Jesus as their Savior, to mature in their faith, and to transition back into society as good citizens … Changing FOCUS, Changing Lives!

Vision Statement: Transformation, not Rehabilitation by FOCUSing on Jesus Christ = True Freedom

FOCUS Christian Academy (FCA) provides a safe atmosphere for ex-offenders seeking a meaningful place in society after incarceration. We use a three-phase approach: Spirit, Mind & Body, through life skills classes, spiritual development, counseling, accountability and workforce development with our "Back-to-Work" program. FOCUS Christian AcademyThis structured reentry program is organized and designed to address specific issues which impede an ex-offender's success. These individuals can then make a lasting difference in their families, their churches, and their community.
